Quotes from and about Knight
``I didn't know, I've never really known when I was going to step down from this job. As I thought about it, my first thought was at the end of this season. My thinking was .. the best thing for the long run for this team would be for Pat and his staff to coach these remaining 10 games.'' Bob Knight, as told to Avalanche-Journal newspaper
"He said he was tired and that it was best to go ahead and do it now. I think Bob is through with coaching. I think he got to the point where it wasn't fun for him." Texas Tech chancellor Kent Hance
"He's ready. He's tired." Pat Knight on his radio show
``You've got Dean Smith, you've got Adolph Rupp, you've got John Wooden. There's a handful of guys and he's right in the middle of them." Pat Riley
``I guess you can never be surprised at some of the things Bob does. I don't think there's ever been a better teacher of the game of basketball than Bob. I don't always approve of his methods, but his players for the most part are very loyal to him. I would say that no player that ever played for him would not say he did not come out a stronger person." John Wooden
``Bob Knight to me is Indiana basketball. Coach Knight is a direct result of where I am today, living in Indiana, coaching in Indiana and being married to an Indiana girl.'' Former Indiana player and current IPFW coach Dane Fife
"I've gotten to know Pat pretty well since he has been in Lubbock and I respect him greatly. He has had the best seat in the house, having played for his father and sitting next to him on the bench, so we know he's learned some pretty important lessons along the way. Pat is more than ready to be a head coach." UT coach Rick Barnes
``Maybe he thought it was the right time for Pat and give him a shot.'' Former Temple coach John Chaney
Tech's statement on Knight
Statement from Tech AD Gerald Myers on Bob Knight:"Bob Knight has done an outstanding job as Texas Tech's basketball coach. He has brought more recognition to Texas Tech, Lubbock and West Texas than anyone who has ever been at Texas Tech. His teams have won more games and been to more postseason tournaments (NCAA and NIT) in the seven years he has been our coach than any team in a similar period of time.
"He has won over 900 games during his storied career, the most in the history of NCAA Division I men's basketball. His legacy to basketball is more than the number of wins he has achieved. Bob has given back to the game of basketball as much or more than anyone who has ever coached the game. No one has participated in more basketball clinics and camps and invited coaches to practices than Bob Knight. He has always made time to help coaches with information and insight into the technical aspects of his coaching philosophy.
"Many great coaches have influenced the game of basketball. Bob Knight's philosophy and system of offense and defense have been copied and emulated by hundreds and hundreds of coaches at all levels throughout the world.
"I am pleased and excited we have Pat Knight, who is ready to be the head coach of Texas Tech basketball. He will work to give students, fans and alumni a competitive and excited basketball team."
