SPECIAL EDITORIAL NOTE FROM SPORTS_NUT, 2/26/2011
.
Welcome to the retirement edition of Funny Sports Quotes.
.
The Funny Sports Quotes blog was created in 11/2007 after I could see I could become a blogger very easily using Google's 3-step process for creating a blog online.
.
For me, like most, work is not my idea of a fun experience, so I had to choose the topic that I would most enjoy pursuing and that, for me, was finding and posting funny sports quotes for entertaining and, in some cases, educating an audience on facets of sports even the most ardent sports fans may not have been aware of.
.
At the same time, I decided to compile a database of funny sports quotes that sports fans and quote fans could visit for "one-stop" shopping, thereby helping them to avoid the need to search elsewhere for sports quotes.
.
So, from 11/2007 until 2/2011. I have compiled quotes on the Funny Sports Quotes blog and its sister blog, FSQuotes, that is accessible only from the Funny Sports Quotes blog.
.
As of 2/26/2011, I believe I have achieved my objective first set in 11/2007, which signals for me the end of my funny sports quotes database project.
.
Kindly note that I have already made the last post (SI Swimsuit) to the blog, shut off further entries to Comments, and I will shut off the email address sports.quotes@gmail.com on 03/14/2011.
.
Also note that many features previously cited on this page have been removed, so that a bare-bones FSQ remains for your future reference.
.
I do hope that my venture was successful in bringing a smile to your face or a skip to your step, since that was all FSQ was created for, your entertainment and pleasure.
.
In closing, I wish you and yours, Godspeed!

NFL: Gary's Stram was a showman  (Excerpt)

February 1, 2008

Former Vikings and Cardinals coach Dennis Green has become a television commercial icon because of one not-so-happy moment caught on tape:

"They were who we thought they were."

Former Colts coach Jim Mora's anger at the media launched him into legendary status.

"Playoffs? Playoffs?"

And Jerry Glanville, then the coach of the Houston Oilers, will be remembered more for something he said than how he coached, thanks to NFL Films.

"You're in the NFL, which means not for long if you keep making … calls like that."

And then there's former Kansas City Chiefs coach Hank Stram. Unlike Glanville, Green, and Mora, he was not exactly a one-quote wonder. As a matter of fact, Stram may have the record for having the most memorable quotes in one game.

The Lew Wallace alumnus didn't need a soundbite to be remembered, though. He is, after all, a Pro Football Hall of Famer and a winner of three American Football League titles and a Super Bowl championship in 1970.

He was credited with creating the two tight end offense and was the first coach to use the I-formation.

But when you say the name Hank Stram, what do you think?

It depends.

If you ever saw the NFL Films documentary of Super Bowl IV, then you might think this:

"Hank was a ham. Let's start with that," said Len Dawson, Stram's former quarterback. "I wonder if he learned the word 'matriculate' at Wallace?"

Wallace English teachers would have probably declined the penalty on that one (do yourself a favor and look up matriculate in your dictionary) but then again, whoever said proper grammar is necessary for a classic line?

"Let's keep matriculating the ball down the field, boys."

Go ahead. Picture Mike Ditka saying that to his charges on the sidelines. But Stram did, during the biggest -- and most historic -- game of his life.

"Hank would get a word and just wear it out," Dawson said. "People even today talk about matriculating down the field. Hank was a showman and a unique individual."

Maybe it came from his father, who was a professional wrestler, the ultimate showman sport. And it probably didn't hurt that Stram coached another Gary native, Fred "The Hammer" Williamson, a guy who could tell you a thing or two about the benefits of show biz.

But Hank Stram was one of a kind.
